Edit: this is a reply to your earlier comment, I made a slight mistake :/ :D

Well I have thought about using boards but I had real trouble finding such smooth ones with really high quality locally but I found some canson bristol papers, unfortunately I'm running out of them quite soon and sadly that shop has done so already :/ So probably got to order some from UK or somewhere else and also same case is with Staedtler pencils. I really like those deep and dark blacks of 7B/8B but not been able to find them more than once :/

About darks I use Cretacolor 7 or 9Bs, I push really hard on them and do so atleast three times over a large surface, small areas don't require so much. I have found that to get darkest darks best way is to use really soft pencil right away with big pressure and also with sharp end. This works for real blacks only, for like dark grays, many many layers of different pencils are needed. I usually start with B and build up from there. Usually don't need to go softer than 3B, this already gives a great darks and is still really smooth. I like darks to be really really dark and highlights to be pure white. I think it adds much to black and white, of course there are exeptions, portraits for exaple but mostly I really like that punchy feel.

I wish there were more automotive drawing competitions. Last year WDT was a great example of that. Have been quite busy lately as well, so I don't even know if there are some possibilities right now but I would definitely like to take part in one.
